William 'BJ' Buss has been selected as the head coach of the varsity girls' basketball team at Xavier High School.

"We look forward to the next chapter of the Xavier Girls' Basketball program with BJ Buss as our new head coach," said Kathy Bates, the Xavier athletic director. "He was an integral factor in the success of the Appleton North Girls' Basketball team" which won the Division 1 WIAA State Championship with an undefeated record this past 2016-17 season.

“Coach Buss will add energy and integrity into the Xavier Girls' Basketball program,” said Joe Russom, the varsity girls basketball coach at Appleton North High School.  “He has been an invaluable asset to our program at Appleton North for several years, and he is more than ready to take the next step.

“Although we are sad to see him leave, Xavier will benefit from his style and ability to teach the game in its simplest form. There is no doubt he will consistently make Xavier a contender,” added Russom.

“I feel blessed, humbled, and thankful to be the next Head Girls' Basketball Coach at Xavier,” said Buss.  “I look forward to the opportunity to work with everyone in the Xavier community, and to help make Xavier Girls' Basketball a constant competitor.  We will take pride in playing hard, focusing on the controllables, and giving our very best effort no matter the circumstance.”

Buss played point guard for Mineral Point High School and also at the University of Wisconsin-Richland and UW-Oshkosh.  He graduated Cum Laude from Upper Iowa University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.  Buss also has served as president of the Appleton North Girls' Basketball Club since 2014 and he was their summer coach and basketball drills and skills coordinator.

He and his basketball-loving wife, Jen, have two daughters, Sammie 12 and Ellie 9.  They live in Appleton.  He works for a consulting firm representing manufacturers in the public safety and wireless communications markets.

Buss moves into the coaching slot that was filled on an interim basis for the 2016-17 season by co-head coaches Kate Geenen and Brian Paschen.
