One of the Veterans

Dennis Oudenhoven, long-time teacher and coach

Mr. O was one of the veterans at Xavier.  For 32 years, Coach Oudenhoven had been coaching track & field in some capacity at Xavier, and was the head coach thru the spring of 2008.  He twice coached XHS to the State Championship, when the Hawks won the WISAA Class B crown in back-to-back years: 1984 and 1985.

During 27 of the 38 years that he taught English, Coach O also coached high school basketball -- on the staffs of Coach Ralph McClone at St. Mary Central plus with Mike Heideman, Jim Meyers, Bob Biebel and Lee Rabas at Xavier... including the 1995 WISAA State Basketball Champion Hawks with Coach Biebel.

"I have had the wonderful privilege of teaching and coaching with Dennis Oudenhoven since

Coach O in the Xavier Booster Club Golf Outing
1977," Xavier athletic director Kathy Bates told The Post-Crescent shortly before he passed away. "We were both in the English department. He was the department chair and he was an excellent mentor, and I have been part of his track program for years.

"A highly educated man, he leads with a quiet elegance and grace. He brought those same characteristics to his 'other' classrooms -- on the court coaching basketball and on the field coaching track.  "I have miles to go before I could ever meet the standards he has set."

Please remember Mr. Oudenhoven's family in your prayers.  His wife, Carla, had worked for many years in the Xavier Business Office before she retired, and their children are grads of Xavier:  Chip, Shannon and David.   When he passed away on Nov. 24, 2009, Coach O was 59.
